Tips on working with images for your website

14 April 2009

Working with images

Here are some basics you need to know about working with images and for them to look right on your website pages.

This is the Consolits Logo. It has been trimmed to 200px wide.

This is the same logo that has been reduced in size and stretched on the horizontal to make it 100px wide. It doesn't look right does it? The same would apply if you stretched the logo vertical - it would look squashed.

If you want a logo that is 100px wide the best way to achieve this is by using a program to adjust the size. Something like Corel Paint Shop Pro.

Images should be adjusted in the Paint program first and then uploaded into your site.

Simple steps

  1. Start with the source image and load into your favourite paint program
  2. Select the image or cut out a section into a new window
  3. Select the 'resize' option for the entire object
  4. In this case we are going to resize it by number of pixels - 100 px wide
  5. Corel automatically works out the proportional height to keep the image balanced
  6. Select OK and the image will shrink to the selected size

This is the logo at 100px
